Looking toward the 2012 presidential primaries and election, one must ask, whether the Republicans can nominate a candidate that has the convictions of the founding fathers, the good looks of Kennedy, and the public relations of Reagan. Our current president has seen his favorable rating drop. He spoke of change but has proven himself a true blue liberal, even bordering on Marxist. So then, the question needs to be asked, Who will replace Obama as our national chief?
If one looks toward the state of Iowa (home to the best known caucus), Sarah Palin is gaining support. Don't laugh or choke on your coffee. In the poll taken by the Des Moines Register, (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20091122/NEWS/91122002/1056/NEWS09/Iowa-Poll-State-Republicans-like-what-they-see-in-Sarah-Palin) Mrs. Palin had an approval rating of over 2/3 of the 800 polled. Since the Iowa Caucus is the place that America watches at the beginning of the campaigning process, she may have a chance.
For those on the 'Religious Right', Sarah Palin got one of the largest boosts she could obtain. This last Sunday, Mrs. Palin met and had dinner with the “Protestant Pope” Billy Graham. Rev. Graham, (http://www.billygraham.org)despite his age and retirement, is regarded by Protestant Christians as, possibly, the highest authority of Christian principle. He has prayed with world leaders, presidents, and is the best known voice for morality in the US.
In a statement, Rev. Graham said, “It was an honor having Governor Palin and her family in our home this evening. I, like many people, have been impressed with her strong commitment to her faith, to family and love of country”. His son, Franklin Graham (founder of Samaritan's Purse) said, “Daddy feels God was using her to wake America up”, in an interview to the Charlotte Observer. She stands for the rights of humanity in the biblical sense. Protection of the unborn, “I’m pro-life. I’ll do all I can to see every baby is created with a future and potential. The legislature should do all it can to protect human life”. Source: Q&A with Newsmax.com’s Mike Coppock Aug 29, 2008 Marriage as defined in biblical standard. Same sex benefits and same sex marriage-”Well, not if it goes closer and closer towards redefining the traditional definition of marriage between one man and one woman. And unfortunately that’s sometimes where those steps lead. I don’t support defining marriage as anything but between one man and one woman, and I think through nuances we can go round and round about what that actually means. I’m being as straight up with Americans as I can in my non- support for anything but a traditional definition of marriage.” Source: 2008 Vice Presidential debate against Sen. Joe Biden Oct 2, 2008
Her values seem to come from her upbringing. The same style of upbringing in most small towns in America. President Obama said that the Religious Right hold to the Bible and guns. This is a true account of a lot of small communities throughout the the country. : Her values are those of her church: evangelical Christian fundamentalism. In Alaska, social life in small towns revolves around church membership: it’s too cold usually to hang out in the back yard with neighbors; many people work for very small family businesses; so the church is the main source of social life and is also a replacement for extended family--many people in Alaska are from somewhere else. As a result, the teachings of a church are reinforced repeatedly throughout the week. And people socialize with fellow congregants. So, the values of one’s particular church typically shape the values of the person and the individual’s social circle. However, like all successful politicians, she is willing to set aside her core values in order to further her political ambition. As governor, Sarah Palin set aside her personal objections to abortion, to homosexuality, etc., and did not take action to get creationism taught in the schools.
