From DC to Berlin: Travel in Berlin like a Local

Looking to get out of town for a bit? There is a lot of drama in DC right now in politics, and before you know it, the tourists will be in town for the Cherry Blossoms. As much as you love your home city, travel is good for the soul.

Berlin is a wonderful European city in Germany to explore. Not only do they sport conventional venues such as a zoo and an aquarium, but they also have fantastic cultural sites such as the Bradenburg Gate and Siegessaule. If you are interested in history, as well as having a bit of fun, travel in Berlin as the locals do.

Food and Drink

Locals have raved about a place called "Angry Chicken" in Kreuzberg. The fried chicken comes spicy, extra spicy, garlicky or extra hot. "Angry Chicken" is located Skalitzer St. 36.
Another special place is "Freischwimmer" in Kreuzberg on Vor Dem Schlesisiche tor 2a. Located on the water, it is a nice place to get a coffee or beer and a snack.
"Manouche - Creperie" is one of those places that makes you feel warm and wanted. A small, underground place, they serve fantastic, hot vegetables such as stuffed eggplant as well as great meat dishes. It can bet busy in the evening, in such a small space, but the staff is friendly and your wait won't be too long. It's located Friedrichshrain on Proskauerstr. 29.

What to See

Of course you should see the touristy things such as the Berliner Dom which is Berlin's large, Protestant Cathedral that dates back to 1465 as well as the above mentioned Bradenburg Gate which is one of its most famous landmarks due to its history of separating the East from the West.

You should also, however, check out NowKolln Market, which is a treat and is very local. This flea market is different than the others around Berlin that are jam-packed. Nowkolln is still relatively small, and is as local as neighbors knowing each other whether they are selling or buying. 1950's trinkets are still available to be found, as well as street performers and some food stands. NowKolln is located in NueKolln on Maybachufer, NeuKolln.

Along with the Jewish Museum, Holocaust Memorial and Synagogue, you should also see the East Side Gallery. This is an open air gallery, full of original, mural paintings. The walls are part of the Berlin Wall that separated the city. It was originally only painted on the West side, so this is bit of history to see. It is located in Berlin at MuhlenstraBe.

Where to Stay

Sometimes an apartment is the way to go. It's more personal, very local and you don't have to eat out all the time which can save money having your own kitchen. The "Apartments am Bradenburger Tor" are perfect for families. There is a playground, internet, parking, TV and more. Located in the popular Mitte district in Berlin, near cultural sites, the location is also ideal to get to the bus and the city rail station.

Another choice, the Hotel Residenz Berlin, is also a good option for travel in Berlin. Located on a side street, a pretty quaint side street at that, this place makes you feel less like a tourist, and more like a local. The hotel has oodles of amenities such as a bar, laundry service, pets allowed and so much more. It is in a great, walking neighborhood as well as close to the Kurfurstendamm which is one the most famous streets in Berlin that is chock full of wonderful shops, restaurants and and houses.
