The new book collecting the poetry of Nebraska women will be featured Saturday afternoon in the Old Market as authors read from and sign the book. The event, scheduled for 3-5 p.m. at Soul Desires at 1024 Jackson St., is the latest of several recent readings from the book.
"The Untidy Season: An Anthology of Nebraska Women Poets," which includes work from Nebraska State Poet Twyla Hansen, was published in September and edited by Heidi Hermanson, Liz Kay, Jen Lambert, and Sarah McKinstry Brown. It has the work of nearly 90 authors.
Backwaters Press is a Nebraska-based nonprofit small press that has published award-winning books of poetry.
Manuscripts are being accepted by Backwaters Press for the Backwaters Prize, an annual award given to a poet for a collection of poems. The submission period for the 2014 prize is scheduled to end May 31. Submissions are to be judged by Patricia Smith, four-time champion of the National Poetry Slam and a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award according to the Backwaters Press website. The Backwaters Prize is open to all poets working in the English language. The winner of the 2013 Backwaters Prize was Zena Hashem Beck for "To Live in Autumn."
