This week Zeina Hashem Beck was chosen as winner of the 2013 Backwaters Press poetry contest. She is a Lebanese poet according to the announcement linked above. Backwaters Press is a small nonprofit publisher of books, mostly books of poetry, in Omaha. On her facebook page, Zeina Hashem Beck notes that her winning collection of poems will be published by Backwaters Press this summer.
She was chosen from a group of finalists by Lola Haskens, who has written 10 books of poetry including one published by Backwaters Press.
A poem from the recent book, "Untidy Seasons," from Backwaters Press, was chosen by Ted Kooser for his "American Life in Poetry" column that runs weekly in many newspapers. Kooser, who has taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, began the column after being named U.S. poet laureate.
