From a Rocky road to a Lucky one - a dog's journey (Photos)

Rocky was born in March of 2002, the first of the litter, out the door. It was not hard to tell that he was born full of energy, life and enthusiasm. He spent the first few weeks of his life by his mother's side well protected in the makeshift home his mama made for him and his four siblings out of a wooden box. In the weeks that followed, this makeshift box became less and less crowded as his siblings were whisked away one by one into the arms of big hairless creatures that liked to grab tails and rub ears.

How he wished that he could be so lucky as to end up being taken by one of those fun creatures. They liked to cuddle and play, just like he did, and besides he kinda liked the way they smelled.

Sometime in May, that day finally came. Rocky was taken out of the wooden box by the Campbell family.

They were very good to him, they fed him, took him to the park in their van and at night when it was time for bed, he would jump up on the chair with little Amy and fall fast asleep. He always woke up in his crate, never sure how that happened. He was very happy to be with the Campbell's and imagined that this is what his life was always going to be like. 'Not so bad," he thought to himself.

A few months later, he had grown so very big, he could no longer jump on the chair with Amy, but they still had fun and he loved her very much. One day he overhead little Amy crying, her parents were talking about how sick she had become and how they had no choice.

He was not really sure what it meant, all he knew was Amy had something they called S.P.C.A.

The next day eager to go to the park, Rocky jumped into the van, like he had done a hundred times before.

Things were different this time, Amy was not in the car. He assumed it was because she was sick. Dad drove the van to this big building with a doggie picture on it, he had never seen it before. He could hear the sounds of dogs barking and was excited to play with some doggie friends. He started to become a bit nervous, after all it had been awhile since he was around this many dogs. Dad led the way and he felt a bit better.

Tired, he went to lie down in the big crate (it was similar to the one he had at home) like all the other dogs. Rocky slept for a few hours and when he woke, he did not see Dad, Amy or Mom anywhere. He began to panic and called out for them, he continued to call out for them, day after day, but they never came.

Sad and lonely, he sat in the crate getting excited each time a new bubbly creature came towards him, he was hoping it was Amy. Amy, Dad or Mom never did return for him.

A few days past when Annabelle showed up.

Annabelle was not a bubbly kid kind of creature, but she sure liked to rub his ears and head and she had a great warm smile.

Annabelle did not go away that day, she went to get a leash and took Rocky into her car. It was not as big and roomy as the Cambell's van, but at least he could see outside and he was not in that SPCA terrible place anymore. Rocky did not recognize any of the places that he drove past and was a bit anxious, but he liked Annabelle and it was certainly better than the crate.

When he arrived at Annabelle's, it did not take him long to realize that this was going to be his new home, there was a bed for him, toys and food. He hoped that he would get to stay here for awhile. It was not exactly like the Campbell's, but Rocky supposed it would do just fine.

Unfortunately for Rocky, he and Annabelle did not get along so well.

She did not understand why he loved to rip her cushions apart and eat through the garbage when she was gone to work.

Rocky was a very dominate male dog who often scared Annabelle. Snow had fallen and Rocky loved to play outside, but he hated when Annabelle left him tied up for hours outside when it got cold.

He stopped chewing her pillows, he did not know what he did wrong to be outside all the time. He missed her hugs and kisses.

He began to get lonely and cried often when he was left alone in the back yard.

Finally, one day Annabelle took him in her car, he was so excited that she did not leave him outside again, he promised he would be good. The excitement lasted a few minutes until he pulled up to that big building with the doggies on it.

Scared to go back inside, he starting screaming loudly. He was trying to beg Annabelle not to take him there, this is the noise that frightened Annabelle. She looked at Rocky and said "I am sorry, but this is best for both of us."

Rocky did not know what he had done to end up in the very same scarey place that he was before, sad and lonely.

As luck would have it, Sandra was looking for a present for her boyfriend.

She went to the SPCA to find him a cute little puppy. There were so many cute little puppies, but something kept drawing her towards Rocky's cage.

He was energetic, gentle, playful and yet he looked so sad. He was not a puppy, he was a full grown dog, but there was just something about him that made her feel good inside. She went to the counter and asked about Rocky. The lady replied," Rocky is a year and a half, he is very loveable dog, but is a dominate male dog that needs a male owner, he will be put to sleep in a few hours because no one will adopt this full grown dog. Too bad, he is fixed, well cared for and has had all of his vaccinations"

With that, Sandra signed the papers and brought Rocky home.

Her boyfriend and his family were in shock that Christmas morning to see this big huge dog running down the hall way. Rocky jumped right onto the couch as if to say, "Hey can I hang out here for a bit?"

Sandra read the reports from the SPCA and told the story of Rocky and his long journey. It did not take long for the family to agree, her boyfriend's mom replied, "Then we shall call him Lucky. Lucky he finally made it home."

Lucky has been a part of our family since Christmas 2003. We are thankful to the SPCA and to the many Montreal local heroes who adopt animals abandoned by their owners each and every day.

Lucky has issues about being left alone, and it manifests itself once in awhile, he has had a problem with allergies that costs about three hundred dollars a year, and he hates to be left outside. He is also the sweetest and craziest dog I have ever know.

He is an inside dog, we very rarely leave him alone, he is well adjusted and we are "Lucky" that he finally found us.

Our family agrees, he is just like all of us ~ energetic, playful and disobedient, and it is what we love about him! As for the pillows, we bought him some stuff animals to chew on instead.
