California, not only is it the land of the only state to boast a ballot in 2012 that could make all labeling of GMO foods necessary and not fully disclosing that a food is GMO illegal. But now according to thepeoplesvoice.org and numerous other news sites. A lady by the name of Julie Gengo of Richmond, California has taken the company Frito Lay to court and is suing them for using GMO products in their snacks and misleading the consumer by not disclosing it. How is she getting a way with it? Well on the packages of Frito Lays products you will see, “All Natural”.
Problem is Frito Lay's snacks contain oils that are GMO oils. Hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated and hydrolyzed oils are genetically modified and are not a natural substance. These oils are in all their products. Not even a year ago Frito Lay promised to inform consumers about each individual snack’s ingredients, even setting up an app for smart phone users to swipe the product’s barcode and read about it. Ann Mukherjee, Frito-Lay’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, was quoted as saying,
“What better way to share the story behind Frito-Lay snacks than by giving consumers a look inside our Flavor Kitchen to see first-hand the all natural ingredients and real foods that inspire the products we make?” Real foods? All natural ingredients? Apparently in the eyes of Frito-Lay’s genetically altered foods are real. Well the law suit is backed by some pretty substantial evidence, even Monsanto, the evil company that is to blame for all GMO's says GMO products are not natural!
It does not seem to be bothering the company any either, its as if they don't care are are confident that their poisoning of the public is justified because on Dec. 20, Frito’s “Naturally Delicious” web page still boasted:
“All Frito-Lay snack chips made with natural ingredients start with all-natural corn or potatoes and healthier oils. For our flavored LAY’S®, TOSTITOS® and SUNCHIPS® products, we are using all natural seasonings that don’t have artificial or synthetic ingredients.”
The plaintiff is charging Frito-Lay with fraud, deception, unfair competition and false warrants under several laws including the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. With the GMO war heating up and consumers steadily getting more and more tired of the poison that is on our foods this lawsuit is sure to hit the company hard with around a potential 10 million dollar loss.
One of the best ways to protect your family is to educate yourself and become a “label reader”. Although it takes more time the question you should ask yourself is, “Isn't my family's health and safety worth a few extra minutes of my time in the grocery store?” If the label says hydrolyzed or partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated anything then put it back on the shelf because it is GMO. If it contains high fructose corn syrup, MSG, autolyzed yeast extract or other ingredients that you can not read then it is not good for you either.
Simple reading online of ingredients that you do not understand what it is can save your family from suffering disease and illness in the coming years of their lives. Organic and truly natural products may cost more but that is because the demand is low and the production is low but its well worth your money to avoid the pitfalls that are associated with consumption of GMO foods.
