Friendship is a two-way street only a select few can navigate

Have you noticed how many self-absorbed people there are these days compared to ten years ago? There are a lot of people out there who have forgotten the true meaning of friendship and suffer from a lot of broken relationships as a result. It is getting harder and harder to make friends because of the attitudes people have about friendship these days, but it does not have to be as hard as some people make it.

Definition of Friend

Merriam-Webster defines the word friend as: A person you like and enjoy being with. It also states that the word friend has been around since before the 12th century.

From the 12th century to the 21st century, the meaning of the word friend has not changed from its dictionary definition, but some people have taken it upon themselves to change the meaning and the way friendship is perceived.

No New Friends

Music artist Drake released a song called “No New Friends” in which he talks about not wanting any new friends, because everyone wants to wait until you make it big to come around and start wanting to be your friends. The ones who are there for you before you get famous are true friends and do not only come around once you have something to offer.

Fake Friends

People say there are too many “fake” friends these days. By that they mean that there are too many people who have other motives than being a true friend. These people only want to be your friend because you have something to offer them. They never intend on offering you something or helping you in some way. Then, the second you no longer have whatever it is that made that person want to be your friend to begin with, they disappear.

Jealous Friends

There are also a lot of jealous people who expect you to only have them as friends. The second you try to hang out with someone else those friends disappear because they feel like you do not want to hang out with them anymore.

Friends Change

To add to the list, there are people who change the way they were when you first met them and no longer want to be your friend. For example, they get religious and quit drinking so they do not want to be around you anymore because you still drink. These people think that just because they have decided to make a change in your life you should make a change in your life as well. The only change that usually happens is the two of you are no longer friends.

What is a Real Friend?

It is rare to find a person that has more than a handful of true friends. True friends are those people who are there for you no matter what. They realize that friendship is a two-way street and they try to give as much as they receive from the friendship.

These people do not disappear as soon as you run out of money to do the things you used to do. They do not stop texting or talking to you because they bought a jet ski. The people who are true friends are the ones who check on you if they have not heard from you in a few days. They are the ones who will listen and give advice when you have problems in your life. These people are the ones who laugh with you in the good times and cry with you during the bad.

There are only a select few people who have what it takes to be true friends. These people live very rewarding lives because they are not only focused on their own problems but are there to help others with their problems. They are there to celebrate birthdays, child births, graduations, and every other event in your life that’s worth celebrating. If you have more than a handful of true friends then you should count yourself as blessed, because friendship is a quality that is getting harder and harder to find in people these days.
