"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Ecclesiastes 4:9 - 12
One of the many gifts that are given to us by God is the gift of friendship. It is rooted within us to find those people around us to confide with, to support us, and to care for one another. They are our rocks, our accountability partners, and our teachers. Sometime they are our devil's advocates, and sometimes they are the nets that should we fall into them, they will always catch us before we get hurt.
Many years ago, I was inspired in college to write a sonnet about friendship. Writing sonnets, in contrast to the free-lined poetry that I was used to, became very difficult to master. I wanted my words to capture both the innocence, and the emotions that are entangled within a very close friendship.
Titled "Twin Stars," this sonnet is about a friend selflessly sacrificing their own needs in order to support the other, who was dealing with a very traumatizing situation. Many might be able to picture themselves as one of these two individuals, or perhaps they know of someone that could also easily represent one of the two.
While there are many different characteristics that make up a friendship, and even more that can generate a very close friendship, we must never forget about how friendship was a gift to us by the Lord himself, and how even He believed friendship was extremely important.
Before the blue that settled on my black,
you erased the pain that showed so clearly.
Before I was pushed down onto my back
you grab my hand and pull me fiercely
upward gazing into my sapphire
Eyes with shades of terror and refused to
Let go. You rescued me from the dire
pain that was not meant to be. It was you
who proved this all to me and set me free
from painful words that would cause major fuss.
You take both hands and then embrace me
in the sky for all the world to see us.
Friends forever we became, you and I
