Friends of the Urban Forest: The Green Christmas tree alternative

Many people use this post-turkey weekend to decorate their homes for the holiday season which includes going to the local Christmas tree lot or pulling the plastic replica out of the closet for decoration.

Alternatively, you could pick up a tree that will have a life in the “Urban Forest” after the holiday season. Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF), a non-profit out of the bay area, has a “Green Christmas” program in which they offer living, potted trees  for the year-end holidays. For just $80, SF participants get beautiful, six-to-eight-foot-tall potted trees that may be picked up, brought home for decoration and enjoyment for up to six weeks, and returned to FUF who then grows the tree larger and uses it in an urban tree planting program!

"Living Christmas trees are much more environmentally friendly than dead ones," said Dan Flanagan, executive director of Friends of the Urban Forest.  "People in the Bay Area are good at re-thinking tradition, and the living Christmas tree is a great example."

On Sunday December 5, Green Christmas Trees will be available in San Francisco between 10am and 2pm outside the eastern entrance of the Safeway at Market and Church streets, and on Monday December 6 through Friday December 10 during business hours, Green Christmas Trees will be available at FUF's office in the Presidio.

FUF helps individuals and neighborhood groups to plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco. By making San Francisco greener, they are supporting the health and livability of the urban environment. Since 1981, FUF has planted over 43,000 trees, totaling 40% of San Francisco’s street tree canopy.
