“Friends” actor assists in police arrest

David Schwimmer must have absorbed some of Ross Gellar’s most heart felt qualities, the character he portrayed for 236 episodes on the popular NBC sitcom, since his alter felt compelled to come to the rescue of a neighbor who spiraled into a bout of foul play. Schwimmer allowed NYC police officers to review the security camera surveillance footage on his newly refurbished townhouse on E. 6 St of an attempted theft of his unidentified neighbor.

According to the arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, prosecutors allege the accused, 21 year old Robert Rainey of Newark, was invited by Schwimmer’s neighbor into his apartment with a transgender female prostitute. The 26 year old neighbor, Rainey, and the prostitute consumed an unspecified amount of beverages for a period of time.

Schwimmer’s neighbor then took the prostitute into the bathroom, wherein the prostitute pepper sprayed the would be john and jumped out the window. Rainey attempted to remove the man’s MacBook Pro and cell phone, propping them in the hallway with the intent of taking them when he departed. Schwimmer’s neighbor grabbed a box cutter and the melee spilled out into the hallway.

Rainey is alleged to have wrestled the box cutters away and slashed the victim in the face. The victim’s injuries purported required over 40 stitches. Schwimmer’s footage bolsters the prosecution being built against Rainey, according to New York Daily News sources. Police are still searching for the transvestite, who might have been working in partnership with the accused.

The incident may not be something that spiraled out of control with Ross Gellar’s former lesbian wife, but Schwimmer has displayed surprising dramatic versatility as an actor, notably with the critically acclaimed 2005 Duane Hopwood, where Schwimmer plays an alcoholic father whose adversarial circumstances are more nuanced than those viewers usually receive from the industry. The film was targeted to those in the Philadelphia region. No surprise there.
