Friend of dog shelter dies in head-on collision

The community is mourning the death of Cathy Jo Schwan, 57, of Mansfield. Schwan was involved in a head-on collision on St. Rt. 545 on July 30, 2012 which took her life.

In addition to her love of photography, baking, writing poetry and reading, Schwan also loved animals. She always found the time to help a stray dog or cat. Just recently, she was attempting to find good homes for an abandoned yellow lab and a calico kitten.

Schwan was very generous, and would drop off a case of canned dog food at the Richland County Dog Shelter every week. The shelter offers their condolences on their Facebook page, and is asking if a rescue or adoptor can help her dogs:

"She will be greatly missed. Thoughts and prayers to her family. We currently have one of her dogs at the shelter and the family is seeking rescue or good home for one of her other dogs who is diabetic and blind if anyone wants to help please contact the shelter."

Even upon her death, Schwan wanted to help the animals. Her obituary states that “any memorial contributions received by the family will be instead given to the Richland County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center, 810 Home Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44906 in accordance with what Cathy would have wanted.”

Memorial services were held yesterday for Cathy Jo Schwan. R.I.P. Cathy. Words can never be enough. But thank you for all you have done.
