Fried Egg Nebula celebrates a birthday and plays The Loft in Lansing, Michigan

Michigan is often known and recognized for having a large automotive industry but according to Jerry Hoffman from Fried Egg Nebula, Michigan should be known for a few more exports. "I think now (Michigan's) greatest exports are bands and beer," said Hoffman. Fried Egg Nebula is proud to a part of that expanding Michigan music scene.

For only turning one years old, Fried Egg Nebula has accomplished many tasks. Fried Egg Nebula has toured all across the Midwest and has introduced fans to their "psycadelic-southern-groove-a-billy" sound. Fans will be looking forward to what Fried Egg Nebula plans on doing in the second year of their creation.

I had the chance to interview Jerry Hoffman from Fried Egg Nebula, we discussed everything from how the band has changed over the past year to how Fried Egg Nebula is reaching fans through social media. The entire interview with Fried Egg Nebula is below.

C: When did Fried Egg Nebula come together?

F: We started the band in February of 2012 so we actually just celebrated our 1 year anniversary! Chris and I have been playing together off and on for about 10 years. We actually did some touring with another band together so when we found out we were both free and in the same part of the country we knew we had to play together again. We have always had great chemistry.

C: What would you consider to be some of your most notable music
influences at a younger age?

F: When I was 14 I went to an Allman Brothers band show and then later that year to a Phish show for the first time and it changed my life. After leaving those shows I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. It was really eye opening to see the way the band and the audience interacted to create this energy which allowed music that was in the moment and heartfelt. I knew I wanted to be a part of that.

C: Fried Egg Nebula in a few words, how would you describe the band's
musical sound?

F: Psycadelic Southern Groove-a-billy. The band is a melting pot of influences so it all comes out in some way.

C: What musical influences do you pull from when you are performing or writing music?

F: Writing music just happens most of the time. It can be something I see outside or a melody that creeps in to my head that I can't get rid of until I pick up my insturment and get it out. Lately we have been taking part of rehearsal to just play and see what comes out. This seems to be the most organic approach. We just listen to each other and come up with different melodies and rhythms we would not have come up with without each other.

When we are playing music live I think our biggest influences would be each other and the crowd we are playing for. When the bands energy is up and the crowds energy is up it is the best feeling in the world and always makes for our best playing. We love to play together though and we are most influenced by what the others are playing.

C: Fried Egg Nebula has gained quite a large following in the Midwest, what was the process of coming up in the industry like?

F: It has been great! We have been blessed with awesome fans who have supported us and this thing seems to just keep growing. We have played some amazing places and been fortunate enough to be on the bill with some great bands. We are at the Loft in Lansing, MI on Friday March 22nd with Dopapod and Desmond Jones. It is one of our favorite venues in Michigan too!

C: How would you guys as a band describe the Midwest music scene?

F: The music scene in the Midwest is incredible. I think this part of the country is ridiculous with talent and there are a lot of bands on the rise right now. Michigan used to be known for its auto industry but I think now are greatest exports are bands and beer.

F: How do you all as a band feel social media has helped and will continue to help your career?

C: Social media tools like Jambase, Reverb Nation, and sonicbids have given us not just exposure and a way to share what we do, but also a chance to connect with the people that want to book us, come see us, or just say hello. It has given us a way to connect with people we would have never been able to in the before time!
