Friday the 13th, is a lucky day to taste wine in Portland

An especially heavy week for developed tastings, or shops are being more developed in what they email or post. Regardless, there’s a lot to review so let's get right to it!

Here's Friday's selection. Remember, it's best to taste wine with friends, or someone special, and these can be the same, too. It's also important to remember, Oregonians don't let friends drive after swallowing too much wine. Be a real friend.

“Oregon & California Wines from Hawks View Cellars...
”Planted in 1991, the 50-acre Hawks View Vineyard offers the ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Their east-facing slopes protect the vines from the heat of summer, while moderate elevation ensures optimal ripening. The laurelwood and loess soils – unique to the Chehalem Mountains AVA – lend distinction. Adam Lee, winemaker, has crafted wines from the Hawks View Vineyard since the very first pick in 1995. Also making wines from five different California AVA's, Adam states, "I became a far better winemaker than I ever would have been had I never experienced Oregon’s conditions."
Join us on Fathers Day Weekend as we welcome A.J. Kemp from Hawks View Cellars.
Just come on in, no reservations necessary!
The Line Up:

”Rod Evans of Zancanella Imports will be pouring selection from Italy and France:

Prosecco Brut, Althea (Veneto, Italy) $13.99
The estate covers 22 acres of vineyards in the commune of Valdobbiadene which is considered to be the finest zone for Prosecco. The Drusian family is well known for their high quality. This wine displays fine bubbles and a compelling nose that is refined and very elegant.

“Lugana, Provenza (Lombardy, Italy) 2013 $13.99
Provenza is a winery located at the south end of beautiful Lake Garda, just outside the town of Sirmione. Lugana is a very small appellation. The main grape for whites is Turbiana, a relative of Trebbiano, having developed its own character over time. Very pretty nose of barely ripe peaches and cantaloupe. Very versatile with food. All types of fish-ocean or inland, chicken, pork, fresh fruit and cheese.

“Chiaretto, Provenza (Lombardy, Italy) 2013 $13.99
This delightful rose' is from Italy's Lake Garda region, just 20 miles west of Verona. The perfect summertime wine. Very fragrant with notes of strawberries, watermelon and cherries. Dry, yet fruity and very well balanced. Its refreshing character compliments salads, fish and antipasti-or just by itself! By regulation all wines (red or rose') with a Garda appellation must be a blend of Sangiovese, Barbera, Marzemino and Groppello-what a combo-you gotta' try it.

“Beaujolais "Terre Noire", Jean-Michel Dupre' (Beaujolais, France) 2012 $10.99
A more serious Beaujolais than the price would suggest. Very small production from 60 year old vines grown at 500 meters. "Terre Noire" is a single vineyard farmed exclusively by the Dupre' family. Textbook wine, medium body, fresh fruit-great summer red-drink with a slight chill. Try with pork (the preferred meat of Beaujolais), chicken or salmon.

“Cotes du Rhone, Mavette (Rhone Valley, France) 2013 $10.99
Old school winery (concrete vats) making very true to type wines. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The 2013 is bursting with blackberry fruit with a nice tannic backbone. Drink with forward cheeses and anything off the grill.

“Bordeaux Superieur, Chateau Recougne (Bordeaux France) 2010 14.99
Chateau Recougne once again demonstrates its consistency vintage to vintage and with the outstanding 2010 you will not be disappointed. The wine is made from 78%Merlot, 12% cabernet Franc and 10% cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard just outside of Fronsac. While drinking very well now, this will age gracefully for a number of years.”

2222 NW Quimby St.
(off 22nd Ave.)

“Great tastings held on the first and third Fridays of each month. We serve a “flight” of five wines and usually a super-pour (extra $ and optional). Informal and fun. Served from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tasting fee”

French Rosé; The Best I've Tasted this Year ($15)

Friday June 13th, 2014/ 4 pm - 7:30 pm @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines

“French Rosé; The Best I've Tasted this Year ($15)

“Friday June 13th, 2014/ 4 pm - 7:30 pm @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines

“It wasn't intended to turn out this way. I was just looking for a good lineup of rosé from various regions but as I tasted over the last few weeks both here at the shop and at home there were some stunning, above the pack, rosé that you deserved to taste before they disappear from the market.

“Many importers get nervous when ordering rosé as the concept for them is to be done and sold out of all of the current vintage rosé by the fall. This means that these summer charmers come and go and consistency is non existent for the most part. As it turned out each and every one in our flight is a personal favorite every year and the new vintage has turned up delicious examples of all.

“The two Corsicans are simply devine! The Abbatucci, a bit bigger and firmer than the Marquiliani, delivers unique aromas and flavors and as Kermit Lynch has aptly described it, the Marquiliani is like drinking a cloud. If you pay really is. The Tibouren, what can I say. It would take too long to tell the whole story but you should check into it. We're pouring their oldest vine cuvee, the Vignettes. Margui is always, always my favorite $20ish rosé. The Noble Joue by Rousseau is from a tiny, tiny area in the Loire Valley where there are only six winemakers and only 69 acres of vineyards. The wine has to be made from the three Pinot grapes of the area; Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. To bring up the value end the Oupia is the best one I've tasted in rosé so far this year.

“Needless to say, this is one strong lineup!

An Evening in Provence!
” If there is a place I love more than Provence I would be hard pressed to name it. So incredible, evocative, and seems too live up to, if not exceed, my expectations each time I’ve been there. With no plans for a return on the near horizon I’ll have to satisfy my cravings (and yours, hopefully) with a few bottles of what I would be indulging in if I was sitting at a sidewalk café in one of the innumerable to cute villages or hanging at a rental cottage. We may not be bathed in Provençal sunshine tomorrow, but we’ll certainly drink like we are! This is a fantastic group that shows what they do best in the south of France, which is provide immense satisfaction at extremely affordable prices. Make plans, buy snacks, gather friends, and be here for this vacation in a glass….”

”ONLY $15 to taste all Four

“This Saturday from 5-8 pm we will be pouring some well aged Chianti that is drinking oh so lovely right now. We are bringing back our Italian expert Aaron Hartig, from Vinifera distributing, to help answer all your Italy questions and assist in pouring these wonderfully crafted Chiantis. If you keep reading there is some information below about the winery, winemaker, and its awards.”

“The Terreno winery is located in the heart of the Classico Zone and since 1988, the Estate is owned by the Ruhne family from Stockholm. The Riserva is made of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero. The wine was aged in a combination of barriques, larger oak barrels and tank for 18 months. The winemaking was led by Franco Bernabei (who makes wine at Felsina and Fontodi among others) and who has earned more Tre Bicchieri awards than any other winemaker.
”A Tre Bicchieri award is a really big deal for a winery. It gives the winery bragging rights in the competitive Italian wine market in addition to, well, greater flexibility in pricing its wines. The Tre Bicchiere award is treated as a market validation of the winemaker’s skills and the winery can bask in the reflected glory of that endorsement.”
