The Art Car Ball kicks off the Art Car Parade festivities this weekend with what promises to be "one of Houston's WILDEST parties." Before you get all decked out, know this: the Art Car Ball is actually not a ball but a super-cool block party. But don't be totally discouraged. As part of the fun, attendees are encouraged to be as creative with their ensembles as the cars that are at the heart of the entire weekend. "Anything goes," from men in party dresses to women donning unusual yet beautiful handcrafted jewelry fashioned from car parts.
If you want to take a more conservative route but still play a part in the fashion parade that will take place at the Orange Show Monument, go for it in this season's bright colors and playful mixes of prints. One of the boldest ways to make a statement is to pair bright colors together. Try tangerine with bright pink or yellow with cobalt blue. Punctuate your statement with a belt or shoes in a pop of another color or even white.
Spring and summer 2011's fashion scene continues the excitement with bold mixes of prints. Stripes and florals are a classic mix while geometrics and colorblocks are fresher. Textures are another great way to mix it up. Experimenting with fabric combos of different weights and weaves can turn two simple pieces into an art piece when combined.
At the very least, you can join in on the creative spirit of the Art Car Ball by layering bold statement jewelry or showcasing a few solid pieces over your basics. Don't be afraid to dig around dad's garage and turn a hubcap into a fabulous hat or a pair of headlights into a bustier of a dress - just let your imagination run wild and give yourself the creative release you've needed!
The Art Car Ball precedes the Art Car Parade, which takes place on Sunday and showcases more than 100 of the city's most funky art on four (or even one, two or three!) wheels you'll ever see. Enjoy eats from some of the city's best food trucks and dance the night away to the tunes of bands like The Urban Gypsies, Los Skarnales, and Beans Barton.
