Aaron Coe of Casa Bruno will be pouring selections from Oregon, Italy, France and Spain:
2012 Ca del Baio Chardonnay “Luna d’Agosto” $14.99
Straw color yellow with greenish highlights; fragrance delicately floral and fruity, with notes that remind of citrus and exotic fruits; flavour dry, cool, long, with a slightly mineral aftertaste.
2009 Holloran Riesling $13.99
Nice dry Riesling. Very Alsatian for an Oregon white.. nice petrol and oily rag notes on the nose. A bit of grapefruit mixed with floral notes of lilac. Heavily perfumed and a bit musty. Taste is full bodied with the continued citrus notes.
2011 Domaine La Paradis Chinon $11.99
Always a favorite, value-priced Chinon, perfect for everyday drinking. The color of polished garnets, it has bright red and black fruit aromas and flavors, a hint of a violet and pepper, and a vein of spice threaded carefully through from start to finish. Perfect with charcuterie, cool weather braises or grilled lamb chops with gremolata.
2009 Eguren “Mercedes” Cabernet Sauvignon $10.99
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Deep ruby. Smoky cherry, tobacco, licorice and minerals on the vibrant nose. Juicy, bright and firm, with good freshness and thrust to the dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Gentle tannins give grip and a slightly hard edge to the refreshingly bitter finish.
2012 Ca del Baio Nebbiolo $14.99
Complex nose of leather, flowers, and fennel. Has a fairly meaty grip, with fleshy bold tannins. Long, powerful finishing that begs for some Piemontese food. Drinks better than some producers entry level Barbaresco…
2012 CBGC Malbec $11.99
This affordable gem was made from Columbia Valley grapes by one of our favorite local wine guys, John Grochau (GC in the name), in collaboration with his PDX distributor Casa Bruno (CB). This dark, ripe, über-drinkable bottle was a huge hit at last Friday’s flight of NW reds. Blackberry, plum, coffee, and black pepper waft from the glass on flow seamlessly across your palate. This is extremely well made juice at this price, and many a producer of $20+ Washington malbecs should pay close attention.

“If it is VINO who must support Spanish culture, then so be it. This Friday we will amply demonstrate that Spain still has much to be proud of, if not the royal family then certainly their viticulture. Across the country we’ll explore what is always so delicious, and more importantly affordable, and give even the most diehard Spain-o-philes something to get excited by. These wines, as they always do, are such remarkable deals. As more and more intrepid importers explore ever deeper into Spain’s formerly little known wine regions our lives only get more satisfying. These are wines from vineyards that are 50 to 100+ years old, and the wines they produce at the prices asked are incredible. I hope you’ll make time to show Spain some love tomorrow, and maybe put a smile on that tired face up above.”
-2012 BODEGAS ATALAYA Garnacha “Laya” (Almansa) $9.50
-2008 COVILA Rioja Crianza (Rioja) $16.95
-2011 BARAHONDA Barrica Monastrell-Syrah (Yecla) $16.95…92 pts-Wine Advocate
-2012 BODEGAS LA CARTUJA Priorat (Priorat) $17.95
-2010 TORREDEROS Ribera del Duero Crianza (Ribera del Duero) $17.95
And then some not-to-be-missed bonus pours fit for a king….
Bonus #1- 2011 NITA Priorat (Priorat) $23.95
Bonus #2- 2010 JIMINEZ-LANDI “Sotorrondero” Garnacha-Syrah (Mentrida) $24.95…90 pts-Wine Advocate
Bonus #3- 2001 LOPEZ DE HEREDIA Rioja Reserva “Tondonia” (Rioja) $44.95…truly one of the legends of Spain, Heredia is as traditional as it gets. Remarkable, pure, character driven wines made from 100% tempranillo. As Neal Martin of The Wine Advocate said in his95 point review of this wine, ” …it has withstood the tide of corporatization and homogeneity, and epitomizes timeless, artisan winemaking in their own individual, almost solipsistic manner. Technology is noticeable by its absence here. Lopez de Heredia is the apotheosis of traditional, classic wines: taut, fresh, bucolic, utterly charming and amazingly long-lived.”

Yes, these are something to get excited about! See why from 4:30-8:00 tomorrow, and be sure to bring a plate or two of your favorite tapas with you. The cost is ten dollars for the first five, and a bit more for the world class bonus pours. See you here!
