Friday box office: 'Mama' scares up huge numbers as 'Broken City' cracks (Photos)

It may only be the middle of January, but that doesn't mean horror movies can't make huge numbers at the box office. On Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, brand new release "Mama" almost made back its entire budget by racking in an estimated $10 million on opening day. Two other new openings - "Broken City" and "The Last Stand" - may have had the star power, but that doesn't always add up to success.

"Mama" has been befuddling viewers with creepy trailers for weeks now, and it shows that their campaign has worked as it took Friday's top spot. Coming in second was the serious drama, "Zero Dark Thirty" that is continuing a strong run.

"Broken City" has a big name cast containing Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe, but it could only bring in $3 million on its opening day. Oscar buzz has helped "Silver Linings Playbook" come back to life as it brought in just under $3 million to land at the fourth spot on Friday.

Coming in fifth, "Gangster Squad" continues to play to disappointing numbers as it hasn't even hit the $30 million mark after eight days in release. "The Last Stand" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger brought in a mere $2 million on its first day in release.

Friday box office - Jan. 18, 2013:

  1. Mama" - $10,000,000
  2. "Zero Dark Thirty" - $4,550,000
  3. "Broken City" - $3,000,000
  4. "Silver Linings Playbook" - $2,954,000
  5. "Gangster Squad" - $2,665,000

Full weekend estimates will be out on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, and full numbers will be released on Monday.

Those in the New Orleans area will be able to order their tickets and find showtimes here for all of these films and more at the Chalmette Movies, the Palace at Elmwood, or the Palace at Clearview Mall.
