Friday, 10th day of a New Year, Taste the wine in Portland wine shops!

Wine... for American snobs... Bravo indeed...
Wine... for American snobs... Bravo indeed...

Hey, it’s a New Year, old wine new wine, or how about old-world new-wine…Italy sound okay? Well, yeah, it does, so here’s a three part series of videos on the Wines of Italy!!!

The Wines of Southern Italy

The Wines of Central Italy

The Wines of Northern Italy

Feel educated, informed… now feeling like you’d like to taste some! So very conveniently, we have another Friday of wine tasting in Portland! Okay, people taste and drink wine every day of the week, but of course it’s on Friday’s that the local wine shops present cost-effective tastings of a number of related wines to help you to discover or sharpen you pallet! If Italian wines are not being tasted, see if they have any by-the-glass you could try? Wine shops find success via service, so ask them. They are anxious to earn your trust; to become your “Go-To” for wine.

We have a few more wine shops holding tastings this week, and the usual cast of “late to post” shops that we may be able to update before noon on Friday.

Please take, or meet, friends as wines always best that way!

FRIDAY SIPS - White Burgundy, Cameron Pinot & Rioja
Drop by to taste the three scrumptious selections listed below!
Today, January 10, 3:30 - 6:30

$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

"Domaine Chapuis is a small estate based in the northern sector of Burgundy's Macon region, specifically the village of Mancey. Having been referred to this Domaine a couple of years ago, we are once again pleased to offer up the new vintage of what has become a terrific Cellar Door favorite in our rotation of White Burgundy wines that represent first-rate value.

"Aged without the influence of new oak (only 1-3 year old barrels are used), this wine is for those who appreciate the purity and definition of origin that Chardonnay brings forth. Forthright scents of mineral combine with orange, pear and anise to lead into an overachieving texture that has plenty of range, depth and flavor. Plenty of cut on the back end and finishes extremely long for white Burg under 20 bucks. Try it with roasted chicken or a fish done with a nice sauce. We were able to score 25 cases (16 are left) and while it sounds like quite a bit, they will sell out as previous vintages done. Translation, if you like French Chardonnay at a good price, order yours now!"

Kara Kuehl of Vehrs Wines will be pouring selections from Italy, Spain, Washington and California:

Martin Ray Russian River Chardonnay 2012 - Sonoma County, CA $13.99
Perfectly balanced aromas of baked apple, citrus, toast and floral notes delight the nose and continue as flavors in the juicy, round mouth. Pair this rich, refreshing Chardonnay
with light fish dishes, a variety of salads and mild cheeses.
Barinas Roble - Jumilla, Spain 2010 $9.99
100% Monastrell –Barinas is the name of the small village where the wine is made in the region of Jumilla, Spain.
Barinas Roble is a delicious wine made with Monastrell grapes (Mourvedre) from the 25-30 year old vines. Deep red in color, it exhibits a perfume of blackberries and blueberries, spices, vanilla and coffee beans. Elegant, balanced & polished, it has long pleasant finish.
Feudo di Santa Tresa Cerasuolo di Vittoria- 2011 Sicilia, Italy $15.99
Cerasuolo is a classic blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, both indigenous varietal of Sicily. Well rounded with intense ruby color. Soft and full of elegance.

Feudo di Santa Tresa Frappato Sicilia – 2011 Sicilia, Italy $15.99
Frappato is a native Sicilian varietal that has a thin skin and large berries. It contributes fresh fruit character to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria blend is lively, fruit-forward wine when vinified on its own.
Smooth, lively acidity, well balanced with a spicy, long-lasting after taste.
Statti Gaglioppo Calabria Gaglioppo 2012 Calabria, Italy $15.99
100% Galioppo Rosso
As with so many other “ancient” grape varieties, especially ones that are situated in Southern Italy, there is some notion that Gaglioppo is originally Greek. Recent genetic studies do suggest a strong relationship to a rare Sicilian variety called Frappato.
Ruby red with intense aromas of cherry and spices. Generous flavors of almonds, figs and pears.
Revelry Cabernet 2010 - Columbia Valley, WA $11.99
Washington State’s Cabernet Sauvignon is distinctive for its deep red fruit qualities, defined tannin structure, and developed balance. At Revelry Vintners we source our Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley, targeting warm growing sites. It is in these areas [Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, The Wahluke Slope] that the “King of Grapes” ripens most intensely.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is dark in color and has a wonderful balance about it.
Fess Parker Frontier Red Lot 90, Central Coast, CA $10.99
Red blend of dark fruit aromas black cherry and blackberry along with pepper jump from the glass. Added notes of smoke leather and vanilla complete this incredible bouquet. Cranberry and red currant combine with smoke and dark chocolate flavors that accentuate the sweet mid-palate and help produce soft velvety finish. Enjoy with everyday cuisine, backyard BBQ’s or simply on its own.
And there may be a mystery wine at Dave's desk...
