“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” was a huge show in the 1990s. The cast included Will Smith, and he was skyrocketed into fame and A-list celebrity status. While the cast members have all gone their separate ways, many of them remained close. According to a Jan. 1 report from TMZ, James Avery (Uncle Phillip) died at the age of 65. Avery played Smith’s strict Uncle “Phil” in the sitcom.
It is now being reported that James Avery had open heart surgery and died from complications from the ordeal. Avery has appeared on several television shows but most notably played Uncle Phillip on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” His wife was by his side at the hospital, but left the room to get some food. When Mrs. Avery returned to her husband, she was given the news of his death. Fellow actors have been reaching out via social media regarding Avery’s passing, including his television son, Alfonso Ribeiro.
The story is still fully developing as his cause of death and surgery details were just released to the public. James Avery was a man that many admired and looked up to; including those he worked with closely. He will be missed dearly by those that knew him personally and those that remember him as Uncle “Phil” from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
