African-American History Examiner (AAHE): What is your book about?
SD Denny (SDD): The Baker’s Dozen is a boldly enticing story that takes a look into the life of a young woman who comes face-to-face with the ugly truth that has prevented her from allowing herself to love for many years. It’s an unforgettable account of how the most hurtful of tragedies, even death, can have a positive influence on life. The story illustrates how depression, fear and family secrets can not only tear us apart, but, when confronted face-to-face, can also bring us back together.
AAHE: How did you pick the topic for The Baker’s Dozen?
SDD: The topic of this book includes issues in the African-American family that are often “swept under the rug” and have the potential, when gone unconfronted, to cause lifelong struggles with fear and the inability to grow as individuals. I’m very passionate about the issues as I have come to learn that they are more commonly faced than many of us care to admit. In addition, I enjoy ending my stories with a twist, and the topic allowed me to give my story just the right jolt needed to force the reader on the edge of their seat and to keep turning the pages until they reach the very end!
AAHE: How is The Baker’s Dozen different from other books that cover the same or similar information?
SDD: The Baker’s Dozen differs in that it is a work of fiction, yet the setting and characters are so well developed that readers are pulled into the story as though they are living it and having a conversation with their best friend.
AAHE: What do you like most about being an author?
SDD: As an author, I’m able to inspire readers through life-changing stories. I like to give readers stories to remember and subjects to ponder as they grow in life. I especially like writing in a style that can be enjoyed by both young adults and adults alike.
