PARIS, France – While French President Nicolas Sarkozy was shaking hands during a meet and greet in the town of Brax in southern France, a man pulled him by his suit into the barrier almost knocking him to the ground.
The unidentified assailant was immediately tackled by security officers. French police say the man is being held in the nearby town of Agen. It is not immediately clear what the mans motive was for the attack on the president.
It was in October, 2010, when hundreds of young people were seen in the streets of France rioting after Sarkozy agreed to change the retirement age to 60-years-old in an effort to ensure France's ability to fund future pensions and create more financial stability for his country. The protests were also to protest the governments raising taxes to bring down record deficits and debts from the worst recession in 70 years.
Up for reelection in about 10 months, Sarkozy will be involved in an active campaign seeking the votes he needs to retain his position as the President of France.
