Ice Potential: 9/10 (↑)
All of northern Illinois including the entire Chicago metro and northwest Indiana have been placed under a Freezing Rain Advisory from 9am CST this morning to 7pm CST this evening. This replaces the Winter Storm Watch that was previously in place across much of the area.
Freezing rain along with sleet will begin to overspread the area from southwest to northeast this morning. The onset of the freezing rain will be between 11am and 1pm. Expect a good two to six hours of freezing rain today before the changeover to rain occurs. Ice accumulations will generally be in the range of 0.1 to 0.25 inches before ending later this afternoon/evening.
Surface temperatures are expected to climb and rise above freezing tonight, but before then travel will become treacherous across the region. Individuals planning to travel in, to, or from the Chicago region should save up for extra time to get to their destination. In addition to the treacherous travel is the possibility of airport delays.
