Freedmen's Bureau records on NARA microfilm

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands was created by an Act of Congress on 3 March 1865. The Bureau’s domain was “the supervision and management of all abandoned lands, and the control of all subjects relating to refugees and freedmen from rebel states, or from any district of country within the territory embraced in the operations of the army, under such rules and regulations as may be prescribed by the head of the bureau and approved by the President.” The scope of their mission was broad enough to cover providing education, hospitals, and other legal support, including performing legal marriages, for the freed African-American slaves following the Civil War.

The records of the Freedmen’s Bureau are voluminous, and most of them concern individual citizens, rich in genealogical information. Not all of them have yet been microfilmed, but those that have been are listed below, by state. Including the records of the national headquarters in Washington, D.
