The National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy, whose goal is to help preserve the environment and promote economic development by creating the finest urban waterfront park system in the world, offers New York City (and visiting) individuals and families with children ten years old and up the chance to try kayaking for FREE every Friday through Monday this summer, from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn.
Reservations aren't neccessary, though kayaks will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Park Rangers are available to offer tips and get folks started. The pier is a sheltered area, and thus easier for newcomers to learn on than the
Canarsie Pier and

It is a great opportunity for first time kayakers to get their feet wet in a fairly stable sit-on-top kayak. One correction: It ends at 2 PM not 3. happy paddling!
It is only on Saturday and Sunday, they said, when I called. 10am-2pm, first come first served.
