Free Valentine's Gifts for Everyone

This year, my son's school, Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary, is having a Valentine's Day party in his classroom. He was worried that he would not be able to give a gift to anyone in his class because we do not have the money to shell out on fun valentine treats and prizes for every child. I tried to have a rational conversation with him about how Valentine's Day is the day of the year that we show each other that we love them, we do not have to go out and buy them presents. When he asked me why it is that his dad has to buy me a present each year, I knew it was time to change the subject. This is how we came to this project. After sitting down and making a list, this is the list my sons came up with of 10 free valentine's gifts you can give anyone.

  1. High Fives-It might not be popular anymore but who says you cannot bring it back in style. During the 90s, you could not get enough high fives, and many parents still teach their toddlers to give high fives, however, it is seldom used. It is time we pull out this free gift and bring it back in style.
  2. Hugs-Who does not love a good hug. It can be completely non-sexual and just a comfortable handshake into a hug if you really feel uncomfortable about hugging. The point is, it is free, and there are very few people that are going to turn down a hug; unless you were playing in a dumpster minutes before-- then someone may take a rain check.
  3. Smiles-Most people underestimate the power of a smile. It says, "Hello," "nice to meet you," and at least ten different other things as well. Smile at someone on Valentine's Day and surely, you will catch a few smiles back.
  4. Casual Greeting-This might seem silly, but simply a "Hi, how are you today?" can mean a lot to someone. We do not know what their day has been like and that simple greeting could mean more than gold to the individual on the receiving end.
  5. Compliments-compliments are free. How hard is it to tell your mom you loved the waffles she made you for breakfast, or to tell the girl that sits next to you in biology that her hair looks great? It is not difficult at all, so try it, and make someone feel special for the day.
  6. Manners-Most of us feel as if we are using our manners on a daily basis when, in reality, most of us do not even use our manners every month. Hold the door open for someone, say please and thank you when offered things, try not to burp at the dinner table. Really, it is common sense and most people forget about it every day. Those around you that wish you would use that common courtesy will appreciate it greatly.
  7. Casual Conversation-It only takes a minute to ask someone how they are and to listen to them tell you. This polite chat makes people feel personable to you and usually like you more.
  8. Share-Sharing is always nice whether you are five, fourteen, or eighty-six. It means a lot to people when you share, it is a nice gift because it is something you can always give, and you can give it freely.
  9. Air Guitar Songs-My youngest son insisted that this be included in the list. While not everyone may feel comfortable playing their air guitar in public, everyone has an air guitar. My son says he needs a new amp for his. You can express your creative side by busting out a song no matter how you feel. Do not worry, nobody will laugh if you do not get all the cords right.
  10. Mud Pies-You guessed it; Anthony insisted this one make the list as well. In theory, he is correct, Vancouver is full of rain and dirt, therefore, and there are enough mud pies for everyone. Not everyone wants to have one however.
