Love might be in the air, but so is a chill, so an afghan is still a nice gift for someone for Valentine’s Day. Crochet one of these heart-themed afghans or blankets and warm your favorite Valentine’s heart for years to come.
- The Aran Hearts Throw Crochet Pattern from Red Heart is pretty in pink and is done in an Aran pattern (think fisherman or Irish knit sweaters). The stitches used might be a bit difficult for a beginner, and is listed as suitable for someone who crochets at the intermediate level. For a true Aran look, you could crochet this pattern with an off-white or ecru yarn (Red Heart has a yarn color actually called Aran that would look nice).
- The photo of the Hearts & Stripes Afghan shows it in red and white, but the pattern calls for pink and white, and it would be lovely in either. It looks like it is worked in panels, but it is actually worked side to side, changing colors to make each vertical stripe. The hearts are cross stitched on to the white rows after the base afghan is completed. (Note: This pattern has some words spelled in the European manner, so you might have to adjust the pattern depending on where you live. This UK crochet conversion site might be helpful).
- A great way to use up small bits of yarn (and we all have them) is the I Love Scraps Afghan. The pattern is worked with one background color with alternating rows of tiny hearts in various colors. The skill level is listed as easy and while the pattern isn’t difficult at all, a true beginner might not be comfortable with all of the color changes. Save all of your scraps and crochet this afghan all at once, or work on it a little at a time when you have leftover yarn from another project.
- Since the hearts are crocheted separately and stitched on, the Be My Valentine Throw is easier than it looks. Make it with an off-white or white background and add red hearts, or make the hearts in various bright colors for a bit more of a color splash. If you want the colors to really pop, try bright hearts on a black background.
