This year for the first time, the United Way of Livingston County is taking part in the MyFreeTaxes.com program. This program is a partnership between the United Way, Goodwill Industries, and the National Disability Institute, it is funded by a 4.3 million dollar grant paid for by the Walmart Foundation. It is designed for Livingston County residents that have a combined household income of $58,000 or less, and allows them self file their federal and state income tax returns for free. The goal is to keep more money in the pockets of those who could really use it.

While you can file your taxes online through the MyFreeTaxes.com, there are also free in person options if you would prefer to do it that way. In the Brighton area, you can find help at the AAS Senior Center located at 850 Spencer Rd. Tax help at this location is from January 28-April 10, 2014. Appointments are required, and can be made by calling (810) 447-0868. In the Howell area, help can be found at the AAS at the Howell Library, located at 314 West Grand River Avenue. At this location they will be available to help from January 25-April 12, 2014. Appointments are also required here, and can be made by calling the (810) 447-0868 phone number.

Seniors age 60 and up, can also get tax help through the AARP Foundation Tax Aide. They have 5,000 locations nationwide, and are for seniors with low to moderate incomes. More information on free tax help can be find on the website http://www.myfreetaxes.com/, or by calling (855) 698-9435.
