Dumbarton Oaks in Washington DC is presenting a series of free lectures in January in conjunction with the special exhibition “Lasting Impressions: Body Art in the Ancient Americas.” If you run into conflicts with people because they are critical of your tattoos and body piercing, this may help you all to understand the tradition of body art better.
On January 21 (Saturday), Lars Krutak of the Smithsonian Institution spoke about “Spiritual Skin: Guardian and Assistant Tattooing of the Americas.” The guest lecturer for January 28 (Saturday) will be Blenda Femenias speaking about “Performing the Body: Movement and Adornment in the Ancient Andes.”
Both talks take place at 1:00 pm in the Founders’ Room. These events are open to the public but reservations are required due to space limitations. Dumbarton Oaks is located at 1703 Thirty Second Street NW in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC. For more information or to make reservations, call 202.339.6984.
