Rather than pack up the car and travel hours away for your vacation this year, plan a staycation in the Orlando area. With the ups and downs in the economy, many would be travelers are opting to stay home and enjoy what the area they live in has to offer. Orlando should be and is no different. There are so many things to do that will not break the bank, including many activities that are free.

Lake Eola Park

Created by a sink hole, Lake Eola Park is located in Downtown Orlando and offers plenty of open space to stroll, picnic and play outdoors. This is the perfect place to spend your entire staycation and not spend a dime to get in. The Lake Eola Park is also home to many festivals offered for free throughout the year, including summer and fall festivals. You can catch a play or concert at the Walt Disney Amphitheater or stroll through the Sunday Farmer's Market. The park has a sidewalk that goes around the entire lake with a distance just under one mile. The park also has playgrounds and athletic fields that are open to the public.

Walt Disney World

Believe it or not there are some free things to do at the Walt Disney World Resorts during your Orlando staycation. There is no charge to visit the BoardWalk Resort where guests can experience the night life complete with street entertainers. Live entertainment at Disney's BoardWalk Resort includes (subject to change) jugglers, magicians and musicians.

You can also head on over to Downtown Disney where you can walk through the different sections, checking out the shops and enjoying live entertainment offered on select nights throughout the year. Legoland also has an interactive play area and a place where you can build your own Lego car to race.

Other free activities include riding the monorail around to the different Disney resorts and taking a ride on one of the many waterways at Disney. Watercraft transportation will take you on a relaxing ride, including the resort areas around Downtown Disney, Epcot, Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Harry P. Leu Gardens

Pack up a picnic lunch and head on over the Harry P. Leu Gardens where you can enjoy the lush tropical landscaping and tours of the gardens. Admission is free to the gardens on the first Monday of each month. Tours are offered every thirty minutes with the last tour leaving at 3:30 p.m. The gardens is home to the largest formal rose garden in the state of Florida and the third largest Camellia collection in the U.S.

The gardens are open daily (excluding Christmas Day) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Harry P. Leu Gardens is located at 1920 N. Forest Avenue in Orlando.

Orlando Brewing Company

The Orlando Brewing Company offers free tours of the brewery Monday through Saturday at 6 p.m. During your tour you will learn exactly what it means to be a certified organic brewery. The Orlando Brewing Company is Florida's only organic brewery that is certified and uses ingredients that are grown without insecticides and other harsh chemicals. In addition to tours, the brewery offer free live entertainment on weekends.
