When Jonesha Swinton and Angelique stepped onto Kansas City's music scene, it was as individual artists. Swinton had just begun venturing into a rap career and Angelique was a featured singer on many local artists' albums.
Ironically, Swinton was working on her debut project and asked Angelique to sing on a few songs. Upon working together, a friendship grew and the project shifted from a solo album to a duo collaboration.
Thus, Free Spirit was born.
"Honestly, it just seemed like a fun idea at the time," Angelique said, "to come together as sisters, uniting our talents to spread the gospel."
Proving to be a smart move creatively and from a business standpoint, Free Spirit appealed to audiences as the perfect blend of hip-hop and R&B.
"I've always been a deep, spiritual person and it shows in our music," Swinton said of their style.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, Free Spirit released their mixtape called "Free Spirit: The Collaboration Mixtape."
With bangers like "Picture Me," "Return of the Great," and their single "Head out the Clouds," it's easy to see why fans dub them as the Christian Floetry.
Free Spiriters are encouraged to enjoy the music while it lasts as another project from the two may be far off.
"Right now my focus is school," Angelique stated. "I do hope to work on a solo project in the future, though. No pressure No gimmicks. Just singing music."
Nevertheless, the mixtape was not produced in vain. With a goal of changing the game and giving the gospel in an unwavering facet, it's safe to say the mission is complete.
"I want to bring the 100 percent truth that changes hearts, renews and stimulates minds and that – at the same time – feels good," Swinton said.
In addition to ushering in a new sound for Kansas City, there was a lot to be learned spiritually for the ladies, as well.
"I learned grace and forgiveness," Angelique said. "I also learned to be more considerate and less selfish in relationships."
As for Swinton: "Whatever the Lord's will is, He will make a way for it to happen no matter what the circumstances are."
