Humana, one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies is helping make every mile count this year as it invites attendees at the Shell Houston Open events to raise money for national andlocal charities simply by walking the golf course. Fans at the SHO can improve their own health while making a difference in the lives of others by downloading and using the Charity Miles exercise app that tracks how far users walk and raises money for charity based on distance traveled.
Charity Miles is a free smartphone app available on Android and iTunes and it allows you to select your activity, from walking, running or walk you earn money to help your charity to change the world. Not only can you support a charity you care about but you can share your achievements with others and encourage them to contribute too. Get the whole family involved and raise even more funds!
Humana unveiled its Charity Miles partnership in January at the 2014 Humana Challenge at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. Throughout the event, tournament attendees using the app walked 252 million steps to earn $50,000 for locally based Desert Classic Charities.
How Charity Miles Works
For each mile Charity Miles users walk, jog or pedal a bike on Thursday through Sunday of designated PGA TOUR events, Charity Miles will donate 25 cents to a national charity of the user’s choice. The list of national charities includes Stand Up To Cancer, Wounded Warrior Project, Autism Speaks, Partnership For A Healthier America, ASPCA and many more. The program has no set mileage number to match or beat – the amount earned is based entirely on how far app users walk, jog or pedal.
In addition to the dollars raised for national charities, Humana will match user-generated donations up to $20,000 to benefit a local charity in each tournament location. Humana will select the local charitable organization, with all proceeds generated from app users’ mileage going to support that cause.
Humana Walkit Powered By Charity Miles will be on-site at 2014 PGA TOUR events including:
Shell Houston Open – Houston, April 3-6
Starting tomorrow, folks in Houston can start tracking their miles through the free app to help raise money for local and national charities. The local charity will be The First Tee of Greater Houston – a junior golf program that teaches and instill positive values including health, community and family among others.
