Yes, we're buried in snow here in Minnesota, but it's already time to start planning our gardens and starting some seeds. Here's some fabulous resources to help make it all easy.
Organic Gardening has a wonderful chart that tells how to plan out seed starting dates and when to put each type of seedling out in the garden, from basil to eggplants to swiss chard.
Roscommon Acres has a PDF 12-month garden calendar that tells exactly when to start various types of seeds, transplant and harvest. The calendar is set for zone 5, so it may need to be adjusted slightly for your growing area (Mankato is zone 4, nearly 5). Dana is sharing the calendar in the midst of unspeakable grief for her sweet little son who loved to garden with her, and I hope to plant an extra children's garden this year in his honor.
The University of Minnesota Extension Office also has a chart of spring planting dates and more for vegetable gardens specific to Minnesota. You'll see there are a few things we can already be starting in February!
Last, but certainly not least, Skippy's Vegetable Garden has this fabulous interactive page where you plug in your last frost date and it generates exact dates for when to do what!
Want to know your average last frost date? Victory Seeds has this handy page where you can look it up by state and city.
