Love at first sight can turn into an immigration disaster. Here's your passport to the free world premiere of Limited Partnership, which documents one gay couple's struggle to stay together, despite the legal red tape. When Tony spotted Richard at The Closet, an L.A. gay bar, in 1971, it was instant love. In 1975, they married in one of the first highly publicized same-sex weddings in the United States. The trouble began when Tony, who is an Australian citizen, applied for a Green Card. Tony was shocked when the INS informed him, "You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots." His residency was denied. The lovebirds fought back. In 1980, they took the unprecedented step of filing the first lawsuit asking a U.S. court to recognize a gay marriage in order to apply for resident status. Limited Partnership, a 75-minute documentary directed by Thomas G. Miller, chronicles their 40-year love story as well as their struggle for immigration equality. Their love story defined a movement.
