An upcoming free seminar at REI Fresno will help backpacking beginners with basic planning and preparation. The presentation, Backpacking Basics, will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2012, from 2 to 3 pm.
Backpacking offers opportunities for unparalleled adventure, even for the novice. With epic destinations like Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks nearby, Fresno backpackers have no shortage of options for trips that can surpass even the highest expectations. Beginners need only pack the right gear and plan well to have a memorable experience that will beg repeating.
REI's backpacking basics "will take the mystery out of backpacking with an overview of planning, preparation and gear." If you have questions about selecting the right a pack or choosing appropriate clothing and footwear, this presentation may provide some answers.
REI staff will also provide an introduction to trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles, which are essential for all who seek to enjoy the Sierra. If you're new to backcountry travel, this class can teach you some of what you need to know to reach your destination and be safe and have fun on the way there and back.
Backpacking Basics will take place at the REI Fresno store located at 7810 N. Blackstone Ave. The presentation is free, but registration is required and space is limited. You can reserve a spot online, and you don't need to be an REI member to attend. For additional information, please call REI Fresno at (559) 261-4168.
