Free reggae beach concert series in Amelia Island

Amelia Island SunSplash, a free summer reggae concert series, begins in Amelia Island this weekend, June 5 and will run through the first weekend in September. The event takes place at the Sadler Road public beach access in Fernandina Beach, about 35 minutes north of downtown Jacksonville.

The schedule for June 5 starts bright and early with a 7 a.m. beach cleanup, followed by an official Eastern Surfing Association amateur surfing contest. There will be plenty of fun activities for all ages, including a sandcastle competition, swimwear fashion show and beach volleyball. At 1 p.m., the music officially kicks off with an opening act that is still TBA as of this writing. The main act for the day is Jah Creation, scheduled to take the stage at 4 p.m.

Vehicular access to the beach is closed from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. but free parking and a low-cost shuttle is available at the Kmart parking lot located at 1525 Sadler Road. Since this is a family friendly event, alcohol is prohibited and police will be patrolling to ensure that this rule is enforced. SunSplash sponsors are asking that alcohol consumption be limited to Sliders, a local restaurant/bar.

The July 3 lineup includes De Lions of Jah and Spred The Dub. August 7 features Fourth Dimension and Scholars Word, and The Resolvers and Jah Works close the series out on September 4. For more information, check out the official Amelia Island Sunsplash website, or find them on Facebook for daily updates.
