There are many free online education opportunities available. Over the past couple of years online education has increased. There are more well-known schools are offering these courses through different sites. Coursera is one of those sites. Their mission statement is: Coursera is an education platform that partners with top universities and organizations worldwide, to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. We envision a future where everyone has access to a world-class education. We aim to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.

These are some of the participating colleges: Georgia Institute of Technology, Ohio State University, Duke University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, California Institute of the Arts, Vanderbilt University with a total of 99 schools. Each school offers different courses ranging from Art to Health & Society to teacher Professional Development. There are about 45 class categories offered in multiple foreign languages.

In 2013, they announced that the American Council on Education had evaluated and recommended five courses that can be transferred to college credit. In order, to earn the credit the course has to be taken in the “signature track.” The five courses approved are: Pre-Calculus from University of California, Introduction to Genetics and Evolution from Duke University, Bioelectricity: A Quantitative Approach from Duke University, Calculus: Single Variable for University of Pennsylvania and Algebra from University of California.
