Ever wonder if there is a correlation between eating meat and mortality? Do you know which vegetables pack the highest anti-cancer punch? Is coconut milk good or bad for you? Got arsenic in your chicken meat?
You can get these answers and more, plus free food, at a free Maryland VegWeek nutrition presentation on Wednesday night in D.C., featuring Dr. Michael Greger, a physician specializing in clinical nutrition (details below).
Using an entertaining and interactive quiz-show format, Dr. Greger will test your dietary knowledge while sharing the latest in cutting-edge research published in peer-reviewed scientific nutrition journals. During this free class, he’ll also offer practical advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent, treat, and even reverse some chronic diseases, and he’ll discuss how scientific studies have shown that we don't need to eat animals to be healthy. In fact the longest-living people in the world are California Adventist vegetarians. They live 10 years longer than the general population and enjoy lower rates of many of the chronic diseases that plague Americans, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers.
As the director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture at The Humane Society of the United States, Dr. Greger has spoken at universities, medical schools, and conferences worldwide. His work focuses on the human health implications of intensive animal agriculture, including the routine use of non-therapeutic antibiotics and growth hormones in animals raised for food, and the public health threats of industrial factory farms. He also works on issues such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease), bird flu, and swine flu.
This event, organized by Compassion Over Killing, is free and open to everyone. Veggie burgers and dairy-free ice cream will be served along with snacks and drinks.

I saw Dr. Greger speak at DC VegFest last year, and he was brilliant. I'll definitely be going to this lecture!
Too bad the classes don't mention that many of the new, highly processed vegan/vegetarian products are almost as unhealthy as their animal counterparts. I find this trend, and the support that many veg/AR groups are giving it, to be truly disappointing, especially since these products profit the same agribusinesses that run factory farms.
Oh wait, that's right, the Humane Society and Gardein are partners in crime.... darn.
