Free National Skin Cancer Awareness Month health screenings by St. Francis

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The American Cancer society estimates over 1 million Americans are diagnosed with basal and squamous cell skin cancers each year, while another 60,000 discover they have a more deadly form called melanoma. No matter the form skin cancer takes, early detection is key to successful treatment and survival.

In support of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the St. Francis Cancer Center is hosting a series of free skin cancer screenings during May. All Indianapolis area residents who have a mole or skin discoloration that concerns them or other risk factors for skin cancer are encouraged to attend.

Risk factors for skin cancer include:

  • UV exposure from sunlight or tanning beds
  • Early childhood sunburns
  • Fair skin
  • Moles (people with several moles are at a higher risk of developing skin caner)
  • Past history of melanoma
  • Family history of melanoma
  • Age (skin cancer is seen more often in older adults than younger people)
  • Gender (there is a higher occurrence of skin cancer in men than women)
