One of the hard things about living on a tight budget - and a lot of people are on them these days - is how to handle the pervasive boredom. Sometimes a person just needs a break from the job hunt, or needs a dose of inspiration, or needs to interact with a real person rather than dealing with whatever bizarreness appears on a talk show.
Thankfully, for Twin Cities residents, they have a solution to the pain and suffering of loose ends: museums. While certainly museums have long been the domain of collectors of the expensive and esoteric and elementary school teachers escaping the madness of institutional walls with field trips, museums in the Twin Cities have done a great deal to modernize and make themselves entertaining. Also, quite a few of them have free admission or at the very least, free admission nights.
Minneapolis Institute of the Arts has free admission; there is a small charge for special exhibitions.
Weisman Museum takes donations but does not charge admission; you can spend all day puzzling at the wall of boxed chickens without it costing you a dime.
Como Zoo and Conservatory is also free and open to the public, and as an additional benefit, is very kid-friendly.
The Walker Art Center has free admission on Thursday nights from 5 pm - 9pm - for some around the Twin Cities, it's a weekly event to look forward to. It is also free all day on the first Saturday of the month.
