The television series “Wait 'Till Next Year” premiers on Nov 1, but you can see the entire 12 episode season now on the free MTV app, almost a week before it views on television, according to an Oct 25 report in the “Huffington Post”.
“Wait 'Till Next Year” follows the travails and tribulations of a luckless high school football team that hasn't won a game in five years—and its community.
This is the first time that a television network is making an entire television series available online before its television debut. Netflix made an entire season of “House of Cards” available simultaneously, but Netflix is a streaming service, not a television network.
The MTV app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has been downloaded more than two million users since the free app became available in June. MTV also has a app for the Xbox 360 that's available for Xbox Live Gold members.
In the past, television network executives have worried that posting television content online would dilute television viewership, which means fewer viewers of commercials and a lower income. MTV is betting just the opposite: that online episodes will spark online conversations and publicity that will encourage people to watch “Wait 'Till Next Year” on television.
MTV has reason to believe it has the right strategy. When MTV launched an online promotion of a Miley Cyrus documentary on its app, MTV garnered a lot of online publicity for the show—plus saw an 82 percent increase (week over week) in app downloads.
This free MTV app requires iOS 5+ and is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
