Thursdays are free movie nights at Santikos Bijou at the Wonderland of the Americas. In honor of the Fourth of July the movies this month have a war theme.

July 3 – Saving Private Ryan – Stephen Spielberg’s 1998 World War II movie set in Normandy. Starring Tom Hanks, it follows Captain Jack H Miller and seven men and their search for Private Ryan who is the last surviving brother of four servicemen.

July 10 – Lone Survivor – This 2013 war movie was written and directed by Peter Berg and stars Mark Wahlberg. It is based on the nonfiction book of the same name and is set during the Afghanistan war and chronicles the failed Operation Red Wings by a four man Navy SEAL team out to track Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.

July 17 – Black Hawn Down – Ridley Scott’s 2001 movie is set in Somalia and depicts the Battle of Mogadishu fought in an attempt to capture a violent warlord whose regime led to the starvation of thousands. When the mission goes wrong the men are outnumbered and left to fight for their lives.

July 24 –Three Kings – This satirical 1999 movie is about a gold heist during the Iraqi uprising against Saddam Hussein after the first Persian Gulf War. Starring George Clooney, four soldiers set out to steal gold stolen from Kuwait but instead find people who desperately need their help.

July 31 – We Were Soldiers – Mel Gibson stars in this 2002 movie that dramatizes the Battle of la Drang in 1965, the first major US battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War. It is based on the book “We Were Soldiers Once….And Young” by Lieutenant General (Ret) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L Galloway.
