If you’d like to participate in World Farm Animals Day (WFAD), set for October 2, you may request free materials such as leaflets from organizers, but must do so by Friday, September 23 in order to receive them in time for the event.
Or you may volunteer for WFAD activities around the globe.
World Farm Animals Day (WFAD) “is dedicated to exposing, mourning, and memorializing the more than 65 billion cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and other land animals who needlessly suffer and die every year in the world's farms and slaughterhouses,” according to organizers at Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM).
A WFAD website further explains:
“World Farm Animals Day takes place on October 2nd, which honors the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, an outspoken advocate of non-violence towards animals.
“WFAD observances are hosted by volunteers in communities in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries. Participants include animal advocacy groups and individual activists—anyone and everyone who cares about animals is encouraged to join us in this global outcry.
“In addition to promoting a vegan lifestyle, the 2010 observance will reveal the ways that animal agribusiness manipulates the government, institutions, and a well-meaning public in order to sell more cruel products. Activities traditionally include vigils, marches, leafleting, tabling, and exhibiting. More dramatic events include die-ins, cage-ins and video rigs. Activists encourage governors and mayors to issue special proclamations denouncing cruelty to farmed animals.”
“WFAD is a global observance to mourn the billions of victims of animal agriculture,” said FARM Program Director Michael A. Weber, “to expose to the public the horrors these animals endure, and to empower people to take animals off the menu!”
A media release from Weber suggests the following ways to join in:
- “Show a video! Footage of animal farming and slaughter is one of the most powerful tools available to us, which is why we are offering free copies of Farm to Fridge, courtesy of Mercy for Animals. Screen it to students in a classroom, friends and family in your living room, or even share it online!”
- “Distribute handouts in a busy area with heavy foot-traffic! Leafleting is a very easy, yet surprisingly effective, way to spread our message. Hundreds of people can be reached in just an hour or two!”
- “Short on time? Simply drop off handouts at health food stores, vegan-friendly restaurants, your workplace or anywhere you expect caring people to be!”
