In the wake of the tragedy in Japan last week, many families are focused on the country. If you'd like to do a unit study on Japan, here are some great resources around the web.
- Lapbook Lessons has a wonderful free lapbook on the country with many printables and mini books, along with lots of great extension activities like hiragana flashcards and Japanese crafts and activities. Be sure to check the links at the bottom of the page too!
- This article lists six sites where you can learn Japanese online for free.
- The Crafty Crow hosted this guest post all about Japan, complete with instructions for kids to make their own toy Kurakura Habondanma or Bubble Spinner, facts, traditions and festivals.
Families can read details of the earthquake and resulting tsunami, fires, damage and nuclear threats at the Mankato Free Press, where there are also photos of the disaster. Parents may want to carefully screen what information they share with younger or more sensitive children.
If your family hasn't donated to relief efforts yet and would like to, here's a list of organizations that are helping. This is also a wonderful opportunity for children to organize fundraisers with homeschool groups, friends and others.
