Starting today, I will be posting a list of free Kindle books on a daily basis. Today’s list is for kids. The Kindle is great for kids. You can take it with you and entertain the little ones while waiting for appointments or while traveling in the car. All the books listed here were free as of March 8, 2013. I was able to download and read the books on my original Kindle Fire.
This is an illustrated version of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christen Anderson. Although this is an illustrated book, I would recommend it for grades one through five. This book includes all the misery the ugly duckling faced from his barnyard companions, which makes this version of the book a little too intense for preschoolers. Illustrations are modern and will appeal to today’s elementary school aged kids. Published by Ripple Publishing. A short sample of the book is available as a preview.
Another illustrated book from Ripple publishing. This is a very short book—only 12 pages total. Included are four of Aesop’s fables about Fox; The Fox and the Grapes, The Fox and the Crow, The Fox and the Cat, and The Fox and the Goat. Appropriate for preschoolers, What the Fox Learnt is entertaining and the pictures will hold the interest of little ones. A short free preview is available.
Lily Lemon Blossom Welcome to Lily’s Room
Written by Barbara Miller and illustrated by Inga Shalvashvili. This is a very cute book, suitable for kids under five or for struggling readers in kindergarten and first grade. The book is all about Lily and the things in her room. The text rhymes, and has a comfortable flow, making it ideal as an early reader. Preschoolers will love the pictures. As a mom of three boys, I do not see where this book would hold the interest of most preschool boys, but girls will definitely enjoy Lily and her frilly room. This is the first book in the Lily series.
The Incredible Life of the Sea Turtle
Written by Mark Smith. The author says the book is for ages seven and up but I disagree. This may be true for the reading level, but the content and the way it is written is geared to a younger child. The book tells the often tragic tale of a sea turtle, from hatching through the course of its life. What I found odd about the book is that the narrator is telling the story to the sea turtle, instead of talking to the reader. This makes it a great book to use for introducing the concept of writer’s voice to your kids. The photographs in the book are wonderful. This book is free for Kindle Prime members through the Kindle lending library.
This is the first book in the Ben Alderman series. Written by W. D. Newman. This is a fantasy/adventure novel suitable for tweens. I would put it as a step up from the Treehouse series and not quite as difficult a read as the Narnia series. The author uses very descriptive sentences. The book is about Ben Alderman and his sister Casey. They discover a secret, magical world that their grandmother has been visiting. Elves and dwarves are in a battle to the death against the witch. Her quest is to free the imprisoned warlock. If she completes her quest, the witch and the wizard will be impossible to destroy. Ben discovers that he is destined to battle the witch and to keep her from fulfilling her quest.
