Today is the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001. In memory of what occurred, a number of apps have shown up in the app store to commemorate and explore the events of that day. Here are a few of the free, no-cost apps to download today to remember 9/11.
If you're looking for images and videos of the events that happened on 9/11, this may be the app you're looking for. This app covers images of 9/11 and the aftermath in both photos and video. They are broken up by time and date, and sectioned off by location (Washington, New York, and Shanksville, PA). You are warned when you open the app that it showcases "disturbing still and video images of 9/11, including destruction, injury, and death," and they're not messing around when they say that. It was hard to watch some of the videos, so I would mention that viewer discretion is STRONGLY ADVISED with this app. It is not really made to look pretty, just functional, so don't expect anything spectacular from this app, with the exception of the large collection of photos, videos, and information that it contains.
With the 9/11 Memorial opening up today with a special ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary, the 9/11 Memorial Guide iPhone app is a great way to remember what happened on this day. Out of all the 9/11 apps out there today, I think this one has got to be at the top of my list. It goes through and gives you a tour of the events as they happened, with first person stories and photos of what happened in New York on September 11, 2001. From pre-9/11 to the creation of the 9/11 Memorial site, this app covers it all.
As pretty as it is functional, this memorial guide app for the iPhone will show you the new memorial exhibit that opens up today in New York (for the ceremony--opens tomorrow to the public). You can listen to stories of 9/11, you can search the cobblestones and paves for names of sponsors and honorees, and you can locate the names of lost loved ones that are displayed on the walls of the memorial pools. Additionally, it breaks down the location of each memorial name and where it is located on the memorial, helping you locate it when you visit the site in New York. Very well-thought-out, beautiful app.
This app is simple and functional, and provides information about 9/11 in the form of videos, images, and even news stories. Again, as with many of the apps with videos, the images can be difficult to watch, and some of the videos show graphic images, so be prepared.
There are a few paid apps for 9/11, but I feel that these free apps do the trick in remembering today and the tragedy that occurred throughout the nation.
