Free iPhone app makes you smarter, new Verizon plans rollover data

A free iPhone app that makes you smarter, great iPhone app deals and new Verizon cell plans let you rollover data are in the news today, according to a March 3 report in Engadget.

We all want to be smarter. Well, here's a free iPhone app that helps us do just that. It's called “Learnist: The World's Knowledge at your Fingertips” and this title says it all. This free app gives you a crowd-sourced collection of global knowledge from the best sources. You can find info here about things that you want to know more about—as well as things that you never knew you want to know more about. What's more you can save what you want for later reading.

One of the advantages to getting a cell plan with AT&T is that AT&T rolls over a customer's minutes from month to month. By letting minutes that you don't use during one month at AT&T add to the number of minutes that you can use the next month—you always have a reserve of minutes should you need them.

Verizon is now offering an option on its new prepaid AllSet plans that does the same thing—but with data instead of minutes. A prepaid plan is a wireless plan that is contract-free. For feature phones, the basic AllSet plan is $35.00 a month with 500 minutes.

For smartphones like the iPhone, the basic plan is $45.00 a month, with unlimited messaging, 500 MB of data and unlimited calling. But with the new “Bridge Data” feature you can pick up additional data whenever you need it—plus any unused “Bridge Data” rolls over to the next month for use.

Here are your options:

  • You can get an additional 500 MB of data for just $5.00 with any unused data expiring in 30 days.

  • You can get 1 GB of additional data for only $10.00 with any unused data expiring in 90 days.

  • You can get 3 GB of data for just $20.00 with any unused data expiring in 90 days.

If you are on a Verizon contract now and are looking to switch to a prepaid plan like All Set, it might be a good idea to download the iPhone app “Data Cellular Counter” first. This app gives you a fast and accurate reading of your data usage in real time. You'll then have a very good idea how much (if any) additional data you'll need to get.

Popular in free games for iPhone today is “Joust Legend” (Reg. $1.99). This is a cool, 3D game in which you are a night jousting in the king's tournament. Watch bone-crushing slow motion replays of the action as gold is won from big money wagers. You can practice in tourneys and decide on strategy before you actually battle a rival knight: will you go for the crushing blow or wear him down with jabs?

“The Blackhole” (free today) is an addictive, relaxing physics-based game with HD graphics, unlike anything else at the Apps Store (for either iPhone or iPad). Here you collect stars so they enter a black hole. Aah, but where do they go from there?

“Data Cellular Counter” requires iOS 6.1+, is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and is optimized for iPhone 5.

“Learnist: The World's Knowledge at your Fingertips” requires iOS 7.0+, is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and is optimized for iPhone 5.
