Summer is here, and there are lots of free iPad and iPhone apps to help you enjoy it. Whether you are driving, walking or biking, you can find your way to and through unknown locations with “Apple Maps." “Apple Maps” updates maps data every day to include user-corrected info and is in the process of giving “Apple Maps” a new programming interface, according to a July 1 report in AppleInsider.

“Apple Maps” is making lots of improvements. Besides checking for user-submitted data every 24 hours and incorporating corrections at 3 a.m. (Eastern Time), Apple is overhauling the service from front-to-back to constantly improve it—a promise that Apple CEO Tim Cook made when Apple Maps debuted three years ago to less than stellar reviews. But besides daily updates, Apple is Apple Maps gives you turn-by-turn audio and visual directions that automatically reorient themselves when needed.

“Field Trip” is a free iPad and iPhone app that runs in the background. “Field Trip” notifies you when you are approaching something interesting in local history or nearing a fun thing to do—even a place to eat or shop.

Plus, this app gives you real-time info on when the bus you want will stop where you're standing.

If rural life is more your cup of tea, then check out “Woodall's RV & Camping Copilot," an app that searches more than 12,000 campgrounds in North America so you can find that perfect camping spot. The free app "Woodall's" is a well-regarded source for RV campers, family campers or tent campers.
