Apple has announced that it has blown past the record that Apple set last year for iOS downloads, according to Yahoo News. In just 5 days after customers began downloading the new iOS 7 to their iPhones, iPads and iPod Touchs, it has been download more than 200 million times. Over the same period last year, 100 million devices were upgraded to iOS 6 following its release.

Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 7, features a completely redesigned interface with more than 200 new features, including iTunes Radio, a new, free streaming music service customized to your tastes. Other enhancements to iOS 7 include better Multitasking, a new Control Center, an improved Notification Center, an enhanced Siri and the new (to iOS) AirDrop.

Besides these new and exciting features, there is another important reason to upgrade to iOS 7: Security. New security features like Activation Lock, iCloud Keychain, password management, private browsing and more, work to both discourage thieves from stealing your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and protect you from identity theft.

The New York Police Department is encouraging Apple users to upgrade to iOS 7 because of an upsurge in thefts of phones and tablets, according to Geek. Over the weekend, uniformed officers were distributing handouts explaining that should your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch be lost or stolen, iOS 7 forbids it from being reprogrammed without your password and Apple ID.

The ability of Apple to deliver to customers a free upgrade to Apple's latest mobile operating system wirelessly (and on the same day) is a major advantage that iPhone and iPad customers have compared to customers of Android phones and tablets. An Apple customer with an four year old phone (iPhone 4), for example, can download for free Apple's new iOS 7, but a customer with an Android phone can only get the newest Android operating system by buying a new phone.
