Free income tax assistance at Cal State Los Angeles through March 31

The California State University at Los Angeles VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program is offering free income-tax preparation services every Saturday through Mar. 31 to low to moderate-income individuals ($50,000 or less) who need assistance preparing and filing tax returns.

VITA services for the 2012 tax season will take place on the third floor of Salazar Hall, room 343, on the CSULA campus. It will operate on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:30 to 11 a.m.  Appointments are not necessary. In addition to traditional electronic filing services, Cal State L.A. VITA has launched the self-help I-CAN!® E-File program, where taxpayers will be able to prepare their own tax returns with minimal supervision and guidance. There is no income limitation for this internet-based program, which features a built-in live chat that offers immediate assistance and technical support. I-CAN!® E-File services will be available in Salazar Hall, room 342.

On Saturday, Mar. 24, Cal State L.A. VITA will also partner with the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) to host a one-day community outreach event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Salazar Hall, room 343.

“We are projected to receive about 250 clients during the BOE event,” said David Hossain, VITA site coordinator and assistant professor of accounting at Cal State L.A. “In addition to our regular VITA services, clients will receive health-care, financial literacy and other services. This is also a wonderful networking opportunity for CSULA students to meet future prospective employers, such as BOE, banks, health care providers and more.”

Since 1998, the Internal Revenue Service and Cal State L.A. faculty have trained Cal State L.A. students to make a difference in their communities as part of the VITA program, while providing an excellent service-learning opportunity for the final-year accounting students.
