Free Friday nights at the Portland Art Museum

How well do you know any of the works at the Portland Art Museum?

One of the great things about being a member of the PAM is that, with the opportunity to visit the museum on a regular basis, you naturally start to develop favourite areas of the building.  Being an occasional or one off tourist is fine, of course.  Sometimes that’s simply all we have time or the money for.

But if you get the chance to look at certain artworks as part of your monthly (-ish) schedule, you might find that relationships begin to develop.  The works might be finished (in some cases, were finished hundreds of years ago), but, in a way, they’re still somewhat like living objects.  Living, that is, in the sense that as you continue to look them over a period of time, they can sometimes seem as if they’re changing.

Perhaps it’s merely our perception of the works upon which we are gazing that are changing, but, nevertheless, some form of change can certainly happen, and most often, does.

So if your answer to the initial question above was that you are well acquainted with none or very few of the PAM’s collection, or works in a particular exhibition, then today is your day to change that.

The last Friday of every month, the Portland art museum is free to the public from 5 to 8 PM.  And, perhaps aside from current special exhibitions, you can see anything you wish.

It would seem that if a member visited the PAM, say, once every four weeks, it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine that they’d probably be close to average, in terms of attendance for members.  So in a sense, you’ve got a chance to become a member for free; a chance to develop a relationship with artworks that could very well change your life.  Every month counts, and you never know just what you might find.
