Free flu shots will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Appomattox Wal-Mart parking lot.
The Appomattox Health Department - Central Virginia Health District, is holding the Point-of-Dispensing (POD) Drill in collaboration with the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office.
In addition to offering 200 free flu shots to the public on a first come, first served basis, there will be a Prescription Take-Back program offered.
The vaccinations are available to those ages 3 years and older. The trivalent vaccine, containing three strains of flu, will be used for the POD Drill.
Public health nurses, clerical staff and environmental health specialists from the Central Virginia Health District will conduct the POD Drill, which is a readiness exercise in the event of a public health emergency.
Receiving the flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. Public health officials recommend flu vaccinations for everyone 6 months of age and older.
The flu virus is spread by droplets when people cough, sneeze or talk. The flu can also be spread by touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching the eyes, nose or mouth.
Practice these healthy habits to reduce the risk of flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home from school or work when you are sick.
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Practice other healthy habits including getting enough sleep, being physically active, eating nutritious foods and drinking plenty of water.
The Pharmaceutical (Rx) Take-Back Initiative offered by the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office is part of a national program offering a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs.
Any unused and expired medications can be taken to the Rx Take-Back Initiative for disposal.
